Our concern is that many classroom libraries consist only of leveled books. In the name of supporting children in reading just-right books, baskets are organized by levels and many of our early and emergent readers are limited to choosing books from those baskets that match their assessed reading level. We worry that we have forgotten that it takes a variety of books to contribute to students’ growth as readers. Primary teachers have experienced the excitement when students first begin to read.

I encourage them to retell the story in their own words as they use the pictures as a guide. After we think more about what picture reading is, we think about books that make sense to have in this basket.
