We identify in Chapters 4 and 6 several different sources of the pressures towards the development of a new trade-union bureaucracy. First, any analysis must start with an understanding of the organisations’ specific history and development. Second, it must take into account their position in relation to the state – do they propose to reform it, overthrow it, or maintain it unchanged? This question is, of course, an issue that causes sharps divisions within and between Islamist movements.
