In practice, there are other factors, such as applied potential and pH that can also influence corrosion of metal. It will be very useful to obtain information on the corrosion tendency or the stability of a metal under these conditions. Potential-pH diagrams, also called Pourbaix diagrams, are somewhat similar to phase diagrams, outline regions of active corrosion, oxides/hydroxides formation, and thermodynamic immunity for a metal. 3 (Pourbaix 1966). It has to be pointed out that oxides/hydroxides formed on the metal surface can prevent corrosion of the metal, though the mere presence of surface oxide does not guarantee them to be protective.

Some examples of such corrosion are atmospheric corrosion of steel structures, automobile body corrosion, and steel tank corrosion due to sulfuric acid. It is worthwhile to point out the fact that even steel surfaces suffered by the so-called uniform corrosion can more often appear uneven tempting one to conclude it to be due to pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion, on the other hand, is characterized by deep attacks as will be discussed later. 3 GALVANIC CORROSION On several occasions, dissimilar metals are used to fabricate a component because of functional requirements.

Source: Raja (2008). 2 Factors Affecting Differential Aeration Corrosion The following factors influence crevice corrosion tendency of a metal 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Electrochemical Crevice gap Environment Metallurgy Design Low passive potentials and low critical current density increase the differential aeration corrosion resistance of metals. Similarly, a rise in crevice gap or sealing the crevice can eliminate crevice corrosion. Though differential aeration is the cause for initiating crevice corrosion, the severity of corrosion depends on species such as chloride and H+ present in the environment.
