Within days incidents were reported in other towns and Turkey began to mobilise its forces for a military intervention. In an attempt to avert a major regional conflict, London proposed the creation of a peacekeeping force made up of contingents from Britain, Greece and Turkey. This was accepted by Athens and Ankara. At the same time, a peace conference was convened. However, this failed to bridge the differences between the two communities. As a result, tensions between Greece and Turkey continued to rise.
However, no agreement was reached. In April 1967 the Greek military seized control of the government. Five months later, in September, the Greek and Turkish prime ministers held a series of discussions on either side of the border in Thrace.
