Throughout history Qatar and Qataris have been isolated enough by their geography to hide away from authority and escape notice when needed, but not so isolated as to be forgotten. Although early mapmakers were wrong to describe Qatar as an island, the short and defensible strip of land connecting Qatar to Saudi Arabia and then to Abu Dhabi has often allowed Qataris to act like islanders.
