19 Gershwin never replied to such statements. But, in 1929, he became drawn to this idea of an opera about a Jewish shtetl, and he began composing some of the music. As he would later do in Porgy and Bess, he wrote choral prayers. Goldberg, who heard Gershwin play this music, described it as having a “slow lilt [that] gradually assumed a hieratic character, swinging in drowsy dignity above the drone. ”20 If there was any problem with such a text, it was that it was not an American story. Gershwin had from the beginning expressed his desire to write not just an opera, but one that was distinctly American.
The same spirit is in the nose-thumbing of the taxi horns and, later, in the staccato calls that make up the two other walking themes. It is even present in the blues, which has a comic edge: this homesick melody coexists with continuing jocular asides by the flutes. The premiere had been promised to Walter Damrosch and the New York Symphony Orchestra, who had introduced Concerto in F, and the first performance took place almost three years to the day after the concerto’s premiere, at the end of 1928.
